Summary

SU•PER•B strongly supports the ambitious goals of the US, the state of California, and other organizations (AIA, ASHRAE, USGBC, etc) to substantially improve the energy efficiency of our building stock.

Computer simulations during building development often show that substantial energy savings are achievable cost-effectively. Yet once the buildings are constructed and occupied, the energy efficiency actually achieved can fall far short of the predicted savings.

It has been estimated that:

  • In a new building, from 10% to 30% or more of the energy savings predicted during design is wasted because of inefficiencies in its design and construction.
  • In an existing building, from 10% to 30% of its potential energy efficiency is wasted from inefficient operation and maintenance.

To help improve building energy efficiency, comfort, and performance, SU•PER•B:

  • Participates in the evaluation of recently occupied buildings, to better understand the causes of problems and how to avoid them in the future.
  • Applies our expertise about energy simulations to improve education software, seminars, guidelines and other resourdes.
  • Collaborates in research efforts to help find ways to improve building performance and comfort while advancing the energy and water efficiency.
  • Develops guidelines and standards for high performance, low energy buildings.
  • Develops educational software, interactive educational websites, and related resources.
