History

SuPerB was founded in 2008 by Executive Director Joseph Deringer, as an outgrowth of decades of work in the building-energy-efficiency field. Over his years in the industry, Joe has conducted innumerable workshops and presentations on a variety of the most pertinent building-energy-efficiency topics, including Std 90.1 and energy-code compliance, lighting and daylighting, and efficiency guidelines and standards. A building-efficiency expert, he has played a key role in helping ten countries around the world develop, implement, or revise energy codes for commercial, public, and residential buildings, from India to the Philippines.

Education has always been at the heart of SuPerB's mission, from workshops and webinars to the development of cutting-edge, open-source software. As such, the true catalyst of SuPerB's growth in its fledgling years was, and remains today the development of computer-based educational (CBE) programs to serve the building industry.

Beginning in 1994, SuPerB developed a first-generation HVAC CBE tool in CD ROM format: the HVAC Energy Primer (aka Energy Trainer). Intended to provide an interactive version of the HVAC portion of the US FEMP Energy Manager's training manual, the project was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency, and developed by a team that included The Deringer Group (TDG), CTG Energetics, and others.

In 2000, the HVAC Energy Primer was made available online at www.ecoadvisor.org, where it remains today. All subsequent versions of Learn HVAC have been made available to the public online at www.learnhvac.org.

Today, the development of CBE programs for the building industry remains our core objective. Now, more than ever, well-trained and highly skilled professionals are needed to design, construct, operate, repair, and maintain our increasingly advanced, efficient, and complex buildings and building systems. SuPerB aims to meet that need, and believes that the most effective and efficient way to train this expanding workforce is with CBE tools that bolster traditional education and training modes within both 2- and 4-year higher education programs.
